Radishes are directly seeded in the garden.
Directly seed on the seventh of every month from April through August. Plant the seeds four inches apart with three rows per bed. Once the seeds have germinated, thin the radishes if necessary, as the plants need enough room for their roots to develop.
Adequate water and well-fertilized soil is important for the healthy development of radishes. While able to grow under most conditions, slow development will result in an undesirable spicy, tough radish. Growing better in cool weather, heat and dry will often slow the development, which in other conditions is quite rapid. Be sure to control weeds all throughout the growing season by hand cultivation to promote growth.
Because radishes mature quite quickly (approximately 30 days from seed to harvest) they should be checked quite frequently. Once the radish is just under an inch in diameter, they can be pulled up carefully. The harvest will go quite quickly, as radishes rapidly becoming pithy and hot, and are overall better when young and small.
After washing, radishes can be kept refrigerated in a perforated plastic bag. They will store with the greens overnight, but if being kept for longer, the tops should be removed. They will store quite well in the refrigerator for up to a week before starting to lose some of their crunch and flavor.
